Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights is concerned about a large number of prisoners who as suspects of having been involved in genocide have been imprisoned for more than 5 years without any trial. A significant fraction among them have case files without any details about the reasons of their incarceration.
Global Campaign for Rwandans' Human Rights urges the Rwandan government, particularly the ministry of justice to take the following important steps without delay:
- Make public the number of prisoners who have been imprisoned without trial for more than 6 months;
- Temporally release all prisoners who have been imprisoned for more than 6 months without trial;
- Re-assess all cases of released prisoners and send relevant information to the appropriate courts where there are admissible evidence and give freedom those without strong case for their culpability before a court of law;
- Publicly apologize to prisoners who have been upheld in jail without trial for a long period than it is required by the law, to those victims whose justice has been delayed, and seek ways of compensating them for damages caused for endured lack of justice.
